Artist Showcase: Katie McMurry

Katie McMurry is a photographer, graphic designer, and mosaic artist, in that order. While photography is her passion, she missed working with her hands. As a terrible knitter, with no room in her small house for a dark room, and too impatient for needlepoint, when a local mosaic artist was looking for an intern, Katie jumped at the chance. That was 2018, and she hasn’t looked back. Katie is inspired by illustrators like Saul Bass, Mary Blair, and filmmaker Wes Anderson. Sometimes she just makes art because she likes the colors. Katie actually won her first national award for graphic design in 1992.

You will often see her around local Kensington and Silver Spring parks, in spring and fall, photographing her clients. She winters in her basement studio amongst her shards of glass. In the summers, she is likely at the pool doing swim mom duties. Besides all of the above, she’s the mother of two amazing girls and a strong advocate for arts education. Katie has a BA in History from Franklin and Marshall College, with a minor in Theatre Design. If you bring her coffee, she’ll be your friend for life.
